Of all the places I could have chosen, travelling in Colombia became my unexpected haven. It all started in the autumn of 2022, during a work trip that took me from Pride Amsterdam to a conference in Guadalajara, Mexico. Standing halfway across the world, I made a decision that changed everything. I stayed longer, gave myself permission to explore, and let instinct guide me.
But then came the big question: where to go? Colombia kept calling me back. It was not only about the adventure that waited there with deserts, jungles, mountains, the Caribbean and the Atlantic coasts. It was also the stories I had heard about the people, their warmth, their laughter, and the way they make you feel at home.

Bogotá: A Bold Beginning
I landed in Bogotá, the bustling capital. My childhood friend Max was based there, but he happened to be in New York, so I had the city to myself. Alone in a place people had warned me about, I wondered if I should even step outside. Was it safe to walk the streets, or better to hide away in the apartment?
Those fears did not last long. Once I went out, I realised how outdated those warnings were. Bogotá had its noise and chaos, but I never felt unsafe. The people I met were warm, curious, and welcoming. Colombia started showing me its true face, alive, colourful, and full of energy.
The Tayrona Jungle: A World Untouched
One of my favourite experiences was in Tayrona National Park. Floating down a river on an inflatable ring, surrounded by jungle sounds, I felt part of nature itself. Monkeys called in the distance, birds filled the air, and for hours I drifted alone in silence. It was magical and grounding.

Meeting Sebastián
Colombia is also where I met Sebastián. Our first meeting in Bogotá’s Financial District was the start of something life-changing. In ten days we visited museums, tried unforgettable food like Yabana and discovered each other’s worlds.
Since December 2022, not a single day has passed without us being in touch. And now, two years later, we are preparing to travel through Colombia together for the first time.
